The Judicial Training Institute (JTI) on Thursday June 30, 2022 concluded a two-day training of Judicial officers, Economists, Statisticians, Policy Analysts and Systems Administrators in "Analysis and Interpretation of Statistics; Production of National Priority Gender and Equity Indicators (NPGEIs)".

The Under Secretary, Ms Maureen Kasande, who represented the Permanent Secretary/Secretary to the Judiciary, Dr Pius Bigirimana, at the opening of the training noted that it is aimed at equipping the participants with the necessary skills to collect and produce statistics that are responsive to gender and equity issues.

Ms Kasande informed participants about the current statistical reforms in the Judiciary. "I am glad that we are working with the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) to build capacity of our staff to be able to produce reliable statistics in a timely manner," she said.

HW Daniel Bwambale(Head of Law Reporting) who represented the Executive Director JTI, Justice Damalie N. Lwanga, noted that the training on analysis and interpretation of statistics was very critical. "We are living in the world where countries such as ours need to harness the power of data and statistics to inform key decisions due to their immense need for socio-economic transformation," he said.

The participants were therefore expected to use the training to improve on the accuracy of statistical information in the Judiciary.

The Commissioner Human Resource Management, Ms Apophia N Tumwine implored participants to pay attention to their tasks so as to deliver on time, accurately and excellently. "You have a role to play to produce statistics for the institution -it is a very big job to do but embrace it," she said.

The Chief Registrar's remarks were delivered by HW Amos Kwizera (Registrar Planning Research and Development) and she appreciated the facilitators from UBOS for having shared knowledge. She noted that Judiciary has in place a Gender Policy to address obstacles in the judicial system.

It was reported that the policy is under review and its main objective is to address a number of barriers on access to Justice especially for women.

The training was facilitated by a team from UBOS led by Ms Helen Nviiri Namirembe, the Director Social Statistics and moderated by Mr Kagoro Julius Caesar, Senior Policy Analyst.

HW Eleanor Khainza(outgoing Deputy Registrar Magistrates Affairs and Data Management) and HW John Paul Edoku (Deputy Registrar Planning, Research and Development) were notably present.
